Liano, a critic in his own right and long-time collaborator of Rigoberta Menchú, is one of the two best Guatemalan prose writers of his generation, along with Rodrigo Rey Rosa. In this historical novel which explores hybrid cultures, the main character Benito enters what can best be described as an Asturias world. Colloquial language, bookish references, and irony (chapter XI set in a bordello is hilarious) combine to provide what is actually a bittersweet recreation of the Patzicía massacre –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
